Merced College to cancel plans to offer College for Kids this summer

MERCED, Calif.— Merced College has been carefully monitoring guidelines from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) as well as state and local governments related to the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, the college has made the difficult decision to cancel plans to offer the College for Kids Program this summer.

Since 1976, Merced College has offered the College for Kids Program in the summertime as part of its commitment to provide education, enrichment, and adventure to the community. The program was slated to run from June 8th through July 30th and included a wide array of classes and activities from the popular Youth Theatre Program to football camp.

“Cancelling this year’s College for Kids classes was an extremely hard decision,” says Jessica Moran who oversees Community Services as the Dean of Adult Education, Noncredit & Workforce Development. “We appreciate the community’s understanding in these unprecedented times and are already planning for summer 2021 when College for Kids will be back and better than ever.”

College for Kids is a long-standing and important program that is part of the Merced College’s Community Services offerings. Community Services staff work hard to bring new, creative classes on the books with many behind-the-scene hours to ensure classes are up to par. The team strives to engage with the community to bring relevant offerings to them.

College for Kids is supported by tuition from fee-based classes and contributions from individuals and organizations who offer scholarships to enable local families to attend the program.

The health and safety of the Merced College community continues to be our highest priority. Merced College is taking all necessary precautions and working with public health officials. We will continue to provide updates as they become available. For the most updated information please visit: http://www.mccd.edu/news/covid-19-update.
